What is a Poltergeist?

The word Poltergeist is derived from the German words ‘Polter’ meaning noise and Geist meaning spirit and is a type of spirit responsible for interacting and physical disturbances. These disturbances can include the moving of objects, levitating objects, electrical issues and creating noises and sometimes even attacks on people such as biting, pinching or hitting.

Poltergeist activity has been recorded all around the world and date back to the 1st century AD (CE)

I would like to mention at this point that Poltergeists are very rare, so please don’t get caught up in Hollywood films, TV or ghost hunting groups or the rubbish on You Tube.

How Are Poltergeists Created?

The creation of Poltergeists is a topic of much debate and most theories are very much just theories.

Here are a few of the popular theories:

Subconscious Rage
Poltergeists are created by subconscious rage and psychic energy, usually directed towards a particular person in the household or it may stem from an emotional disturbance within the family dynamic.

Living Person or Location
Poltergeists are created by originates from “unknown energy” associated with a living person or a location.

Quantum Mechanical Vacuum
Poltergeists are created by children who generate poltergeist by channelling energy into the quantum mechanical vacuum.

Psychic Energy
Poltergeists are created by intense emotional distress within an individual (the “agent”) or psychokinesis.

Attention Seeking
Poltergeists are created by often attaching itself to a young people, especially adolescents experiencing emotional turmoil.

The Stages of a Poltergeist Haunting

Poltergeist activity tends unfold in stages that we can recognise as the following:

  • Presence – Uneasiness and a Feelings of dread.
  • Noises – Footsteps, Scratching or banging sounds.
  • Moving Objects – Causing items to move and interact with the physical realm.
  • Communication – Communication through knocking, tapping, or other means.
  • Attention Seeking – Hiding objects like keys and flickering lights and electrical issues.
  • Physical Threat – Rarely, poltergeist cases escalate to physical harm.
