Apparition
An apparition is a spirit or a ghost like image and describes the physical embodiment of the spirit of someone or an animal who has passed. This is a visual sighting of a spirit that appears completely detailed and real like a living person. Sometimes only visible for a moment and is quite a rare thing.
Apport
An apport is the paranormal transference of an article from one place to another and normally associated with poltergeist activity.
Anomaly
In a paranormal investigation, this is a general term used when something shows up on audio, video or environmental data and associated with something that cannot be immediately explained.
Astral Projection
Astral projection or Astral travel is an out-of-body experience, where you consciousness can function separately from the physical body. In this state you can travel throughout the astral plane and on high levels can sometimes interact.
Attachment
As the phrase suggests, an attachment is when a spirit has “attached” itself directly to a living person. This is a very rare occurrence in hauntings.
Automatic Writing
This is where a person produces written words, letters, drawing or symbols without consciously guiding the pencil. The hand is controlled by a spirit.
Aura
A field of subtle, luminous radiation surrounding a person or object. The aura is normally associated with spiritual or psychic abilities and be connected to the other side.
Channelling
A method of communicating with spirits is called Channelling, where a medium receives messages from the dead.
Clairsentience
Meaning “Clear Feeling” the capability to feel or sense emotional energy of a location or spirit, to feel the overwhelming wave of sadness, anger or specific physical sensation that has a historical connection to the site.
Clairvoyance
Meaning “Clear Seeing” The capability to gain information about an person, object, location, or physical event through extrasensory perception.
Cold Spot
Cold spots are usually sudden drops in temperature that are unexplained and associated with the presence of spirits.
Debunking
To find a rational, scientific, or logical explanation for a paranormal claim before accepting it as a genuine haunting.
Demon
A demon is a non-human entity that was never human. Demons, feeding off of fear, oppression and ultimately harm to the living, have only ever existed as a malevolent energy intent on causing suffering to those that they haunts.
Demonic Haunting
Demonic hauntings are considered the rarest type of hauntings and are a severe paranormal event with a non-human entity. Activity can quickly escalates from basic disturbances to physical attacks and possession.
Direct Voice Phenomenon (DVP)
A direct voice phenomenon is hearing audible voices from a disembodied entity via a spirit or through a medium at a séance.
Disembodied Voice
A voice that is heard without a visible physical presence. Can be called a DVP and heard with the ear not a tech gadget.
Dowsing Rods
Dowsing rods are considered a great paranormal investigation tool (in the right hands).
Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP)
EVP is the sound of voices that come from a disembodied entity and heard through an electronic device like a Sound Recorder / Dictaphone.
EMF Meter
An electromagnetic frequency meter is commonplace in most ghost hunting kits, but totally unreliable as EMF Meters also pick up on waves produced by man made items like power lines, home appliances, Wi-Fi routers, and mobile phones etc etc…
Entity
An entity is an general term used for many kinds of paranormal beings like spirits, poltergeists or demons.
Exorcism
An Exorcism is an ancient ritual normally performed a man of god to evict demons or other malevolent entities from a person’s body who are possessed.
Extrasensory Perception (ESP)
The general term used for someone who can acquire information by means other than the known physical senses like Clairvoyance and Clairsentience.
Haunting
A haunting is a recurring presence of a spirit or spirits in a particular location, often by unexplained sounds, sights or sensations.
Imp
An Imp is a small mischievous creature and often referred to as a little demon. Imps are normally found near malevolent energy and in demonic investigations.
Infestation
To describe a haunting often involving a variety of different types of activity and believed to be caused by multiple spirits sometimes caused by a portal.
Intelligent Haunting
This is a haunting where the spirit or entity (not always negative) appears to be conscious and aware of its surroundings and can interact. It can often respond to questions, move objects on command and show clear signs of awareness.
Ley lines
Ley lines are straight, hypothetical alignments connecting ancient landmarks, various historic structures, and prehistoric sites and believed to be the paths of spiritual and magnetic energy.
Matrixing (Pareidolia)
This is the brain’s natural and very common tendency to find familiar patterns. i.e. like faces in clouds, or voices in static, where none actually exist. Matrixing is key to responsibly debunking false EVPs and visual evidence in a investigation.
Orbs
Most respectable Paranormal Investigators will tell you that 99% or orbs are just dust and floating particles. However some believe that all orbs are floating ghost lights which glow in the dark or reflect light enough to be caught on camera.
Ouija Board
Ouija boards are usually wooden and have letters, numbers and a yes/no option. Participants each have to place a finger lightly on the planchette, hoping that a spirit will manifest and guide it across the board to spell out words or phrases. Warning: Please don’t use a Ouija board if you don’t know what you are doing, or you will end up contacting me for help…
Parapsychology
Parapsychology is the study of paranormal phenomena, including ESP, telekinesis, and other psychic abilities.
Poltergeist
Poltergeist are very rare and are a type of supernatural being known for physical disturbances, such as loud noises and objects being moved or destroyed. There are many different types of poltergeists, some are friendly and some are not. Poltergeists come from the negative energy of living people.
Portal
In paranormal terms, a portal is believed to be a gateway to another realm, through which spirits or energy can pass. Mirrors are very well know for this occurrence.
Possession
An extremely rare event when a spirit or demonic entity is believed to take partial or complete control of a living person’s body and mind. There is a lot of scepticism around this situation and many first seek to rule out all possible psychological or medical explanations.
Precognition
The ability to see or know about events before they happen. Often experienced in the form of premonitions or dreams and is part of Extrasensory Perception (ESP).
Residual Haunting
The most common type of haunting is Residual, which is not a conscious spirit. Also know has an “imprint” or recording of a past event and can often be a from traumatic or highly emotional moment from the past. The figures that may appear in a residual haunting are not like an intelligent haunting and do not interact with or acknowledge the living.
Séance
A séance is a spiritual meeting where people attempt to make contact with the dead, usually through a medium who communicates with spirits.
Shadow Person
A type of apparition that appears as a jet black human shaped shadow and is normally seen in ones peripheral vision. There are many theories as to what they are, but they are normally considered by Paranormal believers to be spirits or demons and are not good.
Trigger Object
Trigger objects can be an important part of an investigation and are usually an item with historical or emotional significance to a location or a specific spirit. The item can be used to “trigger” a response from an associated spirit.
