What to do if you think your Home is Haunted

You or members of you family may have noticed things in your home that have brought you to the page, things that can not be explained. This can often be in a particular room or area of the home where you and members of your family have all experienced the possibility of paranormal activity.

Below is a helpful guide and step-by-step approach to handling a suspected haunting in your home

Let me first say that you are very welcome to Contact Me if you feel overwhelmed or want to talk through what you are experiencing.

Please Don’t Panic

Please be advised that most hauntings are not dangerous. That’s just what comes from Hollywood films and fake investigation programs on TV, and don’t even look at the rubbish on You Tube, all of which are just fantasy money making fiction and made to scare you.

The vast majority of cases I have investigated have been unnerving and unsettling as apposed to harmful, some of the things are unknown sounds, the feeling of being watched, cold spots and even objects being moved and do not escalate into anything more serious.

The first thing to do is to try and stay calm and try to remove anxiety and fear. I know that maybe hard for some people has the unknown can feel threatening.

Process of Elimination

Its aways a good idea at this point to check to see if there could be another none paranormal reason for the activity. I am not dismissing what you are experiencing, just trying to help you.

Common things often mimic paranormal activity, such as the following:

  • Boiler noises and pipes knocking or expanding (especially in older buildings).
  • Faulty wiring causing lights to flicker etc.
  • Appliances turning on due to electrical faults or timer malfunctions.
  • Subsidence in the building causing creaks and cracks.
  • Drafts from around windows and doors, or chimney flues.
  • Mice, rats, birds, squirrels and foxes in and around the property.

Other factors

  • Lack of sleep affecting perception.
  • Sound from traffic, airport, railway, industrial equipment or household appliances.
  • Heightened awareness after an experience.

Record of Events

After you have ruled out everything possible, it then time to start to keep a record of events. Keep a record of events can be very useful to reflect on later and to identify patterns in places, dates and times and behaviour.

Below is a a few pointers to keep a record of:

  • What was the date and time of each event?
  • What was location in the home?
  • What happened (please keep an accurate description?
  • Who was present at the time?
  • Were there any other factors to take into consideration? i.e. weather, state of mind, were you emotional, tired, stressed?

The best way to keep a journal of events is to use a simple notebook. You can also use a Note Pad of your Phone or PC and you can also keep voice memos. My advice would be to write it down in a notebook. Also write it down immediately after an experience to capture details before you may forget important details.

It’s always best to talk to other people in the home (family etc), If you have not done this, you maybe surprised that they have been experiencing things too. Sometimes it is just one person who is noticing the paranormal activity.

What not to do

Please don’t take things into your own hands, because it could make things a lot worse or put yourself at risk.

Here are a few things not to do

  • Please do not use a Ouija board or conduct amateur séances.
  • Please not attempt DIY cleansing rituals from the internet.
  • Burning sage, reciting prayers you found on a website, or performing “banishing” rituals.
  • Do not invite amateur “ghost hunters” or ghost hunting groups into your home. These people are only interested in drama and live streaming.

Do you need outside help?

Away from Television and fiction most hauntings and very mild, in fact a lot of people live with a haunting and not know it or just except it, because its not causing distress, you might choose to simply live with it.

Some hauntings and paranormal activity can be causing genuine distress and fear and can also be persistent. It can be affecting Multiple members of the household too.
