Is My House Haunted? A guide for homeowners

Is My House Haunted?

Below is a guide for homeowners (and business owners) of some common signs associated with a possible haunting.

Simple things worth checking yourself before you assume its Paranormal.

There are a lot of things in houses that cause common spirit like activity and can be easily mistaken, just like the following:

  • Central heating, pipes cooling and radiators expanding can all cause knocks, bangs and various ticking sounds.
  • Floorboards can creak loudly when temperatures shift in both old and modern houses.
  • Loft spaces can amplify noises from birds, wind or loose tiles or eves.
  • Flickering bulbs or devices switching on and off can sometimes be traced to loose connections or old electrical equipment.
  • Draughty windows, ill fitting doors and open fire places can create cold spots and whistling sounds.

There are not any real hard rules to say your home is or is not haunted. Often patterns over time and feelings you may have felt will tell you that a haunting is more subtle.

Here are a few more noticeable signs that you may have in a haunting:

Repeated Unexplained Noises

Sometime you hear footsteps, knocking, or tapping sounds that also seem to respond to your presence and can also be heard by more than one person.

A Feeling of being Watched

Most people get a gut feeling they are being watched or they are not on there own. This can often be linked to a particular room or space where it feels heavy, uncomfortable, or as if someone is standing right behind you. Sometimes you can feel someone walk into the room, when there is no one there.

Cold Spots

Most hauntings seem to have cold spots or sudden drops in temperature. A cold patch in a room that does not change even when the heating is on, and put together with the noises and feelings as mentioned above, can be a very good indicator of paranormal activity.

Apparitions and Shadows

When seeing a figure or a shadow person it can be one of most frightening experiences people report. It can happen sometimes when you are wide awake and often at the same spot or out the corner of your eye, as if someone has just walked past.

Unusual Smells

Smells can be a very good sign of a haunting. Myself as a investigator have no real sense of smell, but has a medium I smell things in great detail. When I walk around a home on an investigation and smell cigarettes or perfume, its because a spirit used to smoke or wear a particular scent.

Objects Being Moved

Objects are repeatedly found in the same strange location and not where you left them and sometimes objects can disappear. Most people jump to the conclusion of a poltergeist or at least poltergeist activity, but outside Hollywood films, this is a very rare occurrence.

Electrical Disturbances

This is a complicated one and most flickering bulbs etc, are simply electrical related issues. However there are cases that become more strange when an electrical device like a light or something plugged in only misbehaves during a particular conversation or activity. Devices can sometimes be switch on and off like lights and televisions, while other electrical items on the same circuit are unaffected.
